The Story

The Ronin identity first appeared in New Avengers #11 in 2005, worn at first by Maya Lopez. Clint Barton took it up in New Avengers #27 in 2007, in the Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Yu run, after returning from death: he was killed during Avengers: Disassembled in 2004 and brought back in the fallout of House of M. Ronin was the identity he chose instead of picking the Hawkeye name back up.

The black and gold ninja-inspired suit and twin katanas mark a more tactical, close-quarters Clint, shaped by loss and pointed at the missions too grey for a bow. It is a long way from swapping quips with the Iron Man and Captain America core of the Avengers.

The animation sets him in a battle-ready crouch, swords drawn, moving in sharp, calculated arcs. The clean folds of the armored gi and the glint of the dual blades stand out against the purple backdrop shared across the set. It loops smooth and stylish, Ronin cutting the air with precision.

How It Dropped

Ronin was not a store buy. It was a craft-to-purchase reward: collectors who held both the Ultra Rare Hawkeye and the Secret Rare Kate Bishop could craft one Ronin for $50, and neither source piece was burned in the process. Crafting ran first-come, first-served while supplies lasted, which is how the run settled at 600, the smallest count in the series. Want a second Ronin? You needed a second Hawkeye and Kate pairing.

Market Context

Season 7, Marvel license, Avengers brand, 8.5% market fee. Ronin's market floor has sat above its $50 craft cost, recently around $65, which tracks for the scarcest piece in the set and the one that took the most work to obtain. Only holders of both store pieces could make it, so the buyer pool was self-selected. Copies trade on the VeVe secondary market.
