The Story
Mysterio first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #13, cover-dated June 1964, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. Quentin Beck was a Hollywood stuntman and special-effects wizard who decided his talent for illusion was better spent on crime than on movie sets. He has no powers at all, just smoke, mirrors, holograms, and hallucinogenic gas, but he has used them to convince Spider-Man the world was ending more than once.
The green fishbowl helmet and purple cape are unmistakable, and the character has proven durable across every era: a founding member of the Sinister Six, a recurring headache for Peter Parker, and the villain who anchored a live-action Spider-Man film for a mainstream audience. He belongs to the same rogues gallery as Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, the classic Spider-Man villains VeVe worked through across its 2022 Marvel drops.
