The Story

Doctor Octopus first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #3, cover-dated July 1963, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. Otto Octavius was a brilliant nuclear physicist whose four mechanical arms fused to his body in a lab accident, the same blast damaging his mind and turning a respected scientist into a criminal. Those arms move at his will, and the combination of genius intellect and mechanical strength has made him a threat Spider-Man cannot simply out-punch.

Doc Ock founded and led the Sinister Six, the villain team built specifically to take down Spider-Man, and later pulled off the ultimate move by swapping minds with Peter Parker to become the Superior Spider-Man. He shares the classic Spider-Man rogues gallery with Green Goblin and Mysterio, both of whom also earned VeVe firsts.

First Doc Ock NFT Sinister Foe variant with mechanical arms

VeVe tags every piece First Appearance, its marker that a collectible is the character's genuine debut on the platform. The base "Sinister Foe" is the Uncommon tier here, and the set climbs through a metallic-red special edition to a Secret Rare animated sculpt with the arms in motion.

The Three Variants

The blind box held three sculpts of Doc Ock, each pulled at longer odds as the rarity climbs. The Uncommon was the base pull; the Secret Rare animated tier was the chase.

12,848 total editions across three tiers. Burns run heavier on this set than most: VeVe lists roughly 5,078 of the Uncommon in circulation against 2,538 burned, about 2,625 of the Ultra Rare against 991 burned, and around 1,179 of the Secret Rare against 437 burned. That is a real bite out of the live supply on all three sculpts.

Market Context

12,848 total editions is mid-range for a VeVe Marvel blind box, but the heavy burn across every tier pulls the circulating float well below the mint. The market fee on secondary sales runs 8.5%, standard for VeVe. Doc Ock is a top-tier Spider-Man villain with strong film recognition, so demand runs deeper than the edition count alone would suggest, especially for the animated Secret Rare.

The first status is permanent. No matter how many Doc Ock pieces VeVe releases later, this August 2022 blind box will always be the original. All VeVe collectibles now live on the Collect blockchain after the January 2026 migration, and StackR has been live since April 2025, so all three variants are easier to buy and sell now than they were at launch.

Collector's Note

Doc Ock is a cornerstone of the Spider-Man rogues gallery, and a villain set on VeVe looks incomplete without him beside the first Green Goblin NFT and the first Mysterio NFT. The three-tier structure is straightforward to chase and the burns give even the base sculpt some scarcity.

The Secret Rare "Ultimate Animated" is the crown jewel, but the "Marvel Metallic Red" is the interesting middle play, a special finish at a lower price than the animated chase. All three variants trade on the VeVe secondary market, sometimes near or below the original $50 retail. New to VeVe? Grab $10 off your first purchase
