The Story
Johnny Storm is the Fantastic Four's daredevil, the younger brother of Sue Storm and the impulsive, cocky spark of Marvel's first family. He debuted in Fantastic Four #1, cover-dated November 1961, from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, after the cosmic-ray storm that transformed the crew. Johnny came out able to ignite his whole body, fly, and hurl fire, announced with his trademark "Flame on!"
A quick note for collectors, because it trips people up: this Johnny Storm is not the same character as the original Human Torch from Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. That first Torch was an android named Jim Hammond. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby revived the name in 1961 for a brand-new human character, and Johnny has carried it ever since, teaming with Spider-Man, leading the team when Reed steps back, and holding his own against cosmic-level threats.
