The Story
Timely Comics, the company that would later become Marvel, put a political statement on a newsstand cover before the country had made up its mind about the war in Europe. Captain America Comics #1 opens with Steve Rogers, a scrawny young man rejected for military service, volunteering for an experimental program run by Professor Reinstein. The Super-Soldier Serum transforms him into a peak physical specimen, but a Nazi spy shoots Reinstein moments later, destroying any chance of duplicating the formula. Rogers becomes the sole Super-Soldier, and the issue also introduces his young partner James "Bucky" Barnes and the villain who would define the character for decades, the Red Skull.
The cover alone made history. Simon and Kirby drew Cap decking Hitler with a straight right hand, and the image reportedly drew hate mail and threats to the Timely offices before Pearl Harbor changed the national mood. The issue sold roughly a million copies on release, an enormous number for the era, and set the template for the patriotic hero who would go on to lead the Avengers alongside Iron Man and Thor.
