The Story

Luke Skywalker first appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, released May 25, 1977, played by Mark Hamill. He starts as a restless moisture farmer on Tatooine, gets pulled into the Rebellion when R2-D2 lands on his uncle's farm carrying Princess Leia's message, and ends the film destroying the Death Star. Across the original trilogy he trains under Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, learns that Darth Vader is his father, and grows from farm boy to Jedi Knight.

This collectible pulls from the third film, Return of the Jedi (1983), where Luke arrives dressed in black, faces Vader and the Emperor, and refuses to kill his father, the choice that defines him. He is the protagonist of the Skywalker saga's first act and one of the most searched characters in the franchise, which is exactly why VeVe built a dedicated character series around him.

First Luke Skywalker NFT animated

The first Luke Skywalker digital collectible dropped on VeVe on May 4, 2023, chosen deliberately for Star Wars Day. It shipped as a Season 5 blind box at $60 with three variants, each carrying the First Appearance tag, VeVe's marker for a character's genuine platform debut.

The Drop

May 4 is Star Wars Day, and VeVe timed the first Luke Skywalker NFT to land on that exact date in 2023. Dropping the saga's original hero on the franchise's unofficial holiday was a natural fit, and the published pull odds ran from 1 in 1.34 for the Rare to 1 in 11.45 for the Secret Rare, so the scarce tiers took real luck to open out of a blind box.

The Three Variants

Three sculpts from Return of the Jedi climb from an animated Rare through Secret Rare, all tagged First Appearance.

The Rare is the animated variant, Luke in his black Return of the Jedi attire, regarding his lightsaber before the green blade snaps on with the familiar hum. The detail runs from the folds of his tunic to the design of his belt. As the animated tier it is the most plentiful and the entry point to the series.

Ultra Rare925
The Ultra Rare shows the Jedi Knight in full focus, lit saber raised, in the all-black outfit from Return of the Jedi. At 925 editions it is a real step up in scarcity from the Rare and represents Luke at the height of his training.

Secret Rare519
The Secret Rare is the grail. Named for the line Luke speaks in the climax of Return of the Jedi, it shows him leaning forward, green blade lit, lightsaber gripped in both hands. At only 519 editions it is the scarcest tier of the drop and the piece serious collectors chase. It sits alongside VeVe's other early Star Wars firsts, including the first Darth Vader, R2-D2, and first Boba Fett.

Edition Breakdown

Rare "You'll Find That I'm Full of Surprises" (3,977 editions): the animated tier, Luke contemplating his lightsaber before igniting it. Confident, not yet in full battle mode.

Ultra Rare "Luke Skywalker: Jedi" (925 editions): Luke in peak form, black outfit, lightsaber raised. The scarcity jump from Rare to Ultra Rare tracks the character's own leap in power.

Secret Rare "I Am a Jedi, Like My Father Before Me" (519 editions): the rarest and most significant variant, tied to the moment Luke defines himself in front of Vader and the Emperor. This is the collector grail of the set.

Market Context

As the first Luke Skywalker NFT ever released, these variants carry permanent first-mover status for the character. The three-tier structure gives the series distinct entry points: the Rare for accessible display, the Ultra Rare and Secret Rare for scarcity. With 5,421 total editions and fixed counts, the Secret Rare's 519-piece run is what drives the top of the market. All three trade between collectors on the VeVe secondary market, where prices move with demand and specific tiers can be targeted directly.

Collector's Note

These three Luke variants are core holds for a Star Wars collection: the platform debut of the saga's central hero, dropped on Star Wars Day. Go for the animated Rare to display it in motion, or chase the 519-edition Secret Rare if you want the grail. New to VeVe? Grab $10 off your first purchase and start your Star Wars set.
