The Story
The Jackal, a mysterious new villain making his own debut in this issue, hires a hardened mercenary called the Punisher to kill Spider-Man, convincing him that the wall-crawler is a dangerous criminal. Frank Castle, a Vietnam veteran turned one-man war on crime, takes the contract and hunts Spider-Man across the city with military precision and none of the moral hesitation typical of Marvel's costumed heroes. Spider-Man has to convince Castle he has been played before either of them becomes the other's casualty, and Mary Jane Watson appears throughout the issue as Peter's civilian anchor.
The Punisher's introduction as essentially a hired gun manipulated into targeting a hero, rather than a hero in his own story yet, is part of what makes this debut distinct. He would not headline his own series until years later, but the skull, the guns, and the willingness to kill were all there from panel one.
