The Story
Deadpool first appeared in New Mutants #98, cover-dated February 1991, created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rob Liefeld. Wade Wilson started as a mercenary sent to fight the young mutant team, a knockoff villain who then grew into one of Marvel's biggest solo acts. A cancer patient turned test subject in the same Weapon X program that gave Wolverine his edge, Wade walked away with a healing factor that keeps him alive through almost anything and left his skin scarred all over.
What separated him from every other gun-for-hire is the mouth. Deadpool knows he is a comic book character. He talks to the reader, argues with his own caption boxes, and cracks jokes mid-fight, which turned a Liefeld action figure of a villain into a franchise that carried movies past a billion dollars at the box office.
