The Story

Black Panther is the sovereign of Wakanda, a warrior-king in a vibranium suit, and the VeVe set moves him through five poses across its tiers. The Common "Wakanda Forever" (21,800 editions) freezes T'Challa in the crossed-arm salute, suit textured down to the silver necklace that marks his heritage. The Uncommon "Panther Pounce" (18,800) catches him mid-leap, arms wide, coiled the instant before a strike.

The Rare "Vibranium Warrior" (8,800) drops him low to the ground, one clawed hand steady, the other poised. The Ultra Rare "Animated" (5,800) captures a full backflip in a loop, all panther reflexes and kinetic energy. The Secret Rare "Ultimate Animated" (2,800) chains it together: the salute, the backflip, a combat stance, a lunge with claws bared, then back to the start.

It's impossible to talk about this release without Chadwick Boseman. His portrayal of T'Challa defined the modern character, and his passing in 2020 left the role and the community that grew around it in mourning. The first Black Panther NFT landed while that weight was still fresh, which is a large part of why it read as more than another Marvel drop.

T'Challa's world overlaps with the X-Men, too. Storm ruled Wakanda at his side, and her VeVe drop, the first Storm NFT, even includes a "Queen of Wakanda" variant.

The Drop

By February 2022 VeVe was well into its stride: millions of users, drops clearing in seconds, and heavy bot competition. Landing a blind box at retail was no guarantee.

The cultural moment sharpened the demand. Boseman had passed in August 2020, and anything Black Panther carried real emotional charge, so the release meant something to the community beyond the collectible itself.

Market Context

58,000 total editions is a lot of supply, the reality of the blind box model VeVe used for most of its 2022 Marvel drops. The Common and Uncommon variants (40,600 combined) stay relatively affordable on the secondary market, while the Secret Rare at 2,800 editions commands the highest premiums.

With Black Panther, the name does more work than the mint count. The films crossed $1.3 billion at the global box office and the character keeps showing up, which is the kind of pull scarcity alone can't buy. The Collect blockchain migration finished in January 2026 and StackR has been live since April 2025, so all five variants are easier to buy and sell now than they were at launch.

Collector's Note

If you're collecting Black Panther across formats, this is the digital "first," and with Boseman's legacy attached it carries meaning beyond the VeVe ecosystem. It also slots in nicely next to the other original Avengers firsts, from the first Captain America NFT to the first Iron Man NFT.

The Secret Rare is the crown jewel, but the Rare "Vibranium Warrior" may be the best value: a strong sculpt without Secret Rare pricing.
