The Story
Charles Xavier runs a School for Gifted Youngsters that is, in practice, a training ground for mutants he has recruited to help humanity accept people born different. The issue opens with Jean Grey arriving as the newest student, meeting Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman, who already make up Xavier's team. Their first mission sends them against Magneto, a mutant supremacist attacking a U.S. military base at Cape Citadel, setting up the ideological clash between Xavier's hope for coexistence and Magneto's belief that mutants must dominate or be destroyed.
Seven major characters debut in these pages at once, an unusually large cast for a single first issue, and every one of them anchors a corner of the X-Men mythology that still runs today. The book sold modestly at first and was even cancelled and revived with reprints before the 1975 relaunch turned it into one of Marvel's flagship titles, but this original issue is where the premise, and the Xavier-Magneto rivalry, begins.
