The Story
Journey Into Mystery was a monster-and-mystery anthology when issue 83 landed. The Thor story ran 13 pages: Dr. Donald Blake, a frail American doctor on holiday in Norway, stumbles into a cave while hiding from an invasion of the Stone Men from Saturn. He finds a gnarled wooden cane, strikes it against a rock in frustration, and becomes Thor, God of Thunder, the cane now the hammer Mjolnir.
That setup did something new for Marvel. Instead of retelling Norse myth straight, Lee, Lieber, and Kirby folded a god into the same everyday world Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four lived in, gave him a mortal alter ego with a bad leg, and let the two identities pull against each other. Blake and Thor were written as separate minds sharing one body, and the cane-into-hammer transformation put that split right on the page.
The Stone Men from Saturn made the debut a first-contact alien story as much as a mythological one, a blend that became central to how Marvel built its cosmic corner. Thor would go on to help found the Avengers alongside Iron Man and Captain America. This issue is the print origin; the first Thor NFT collectible is the character in figure form.
