The Story
Grogu first appeared in the closing shot of The Mandalorian's series premiere on November 12, 2019, the day Disney+ launched. Jon Favreau created him as a member of the same unnamed, Force-sensitive species as Yoda, roughly 50 years old but still an infant by that species' slow timeline. The internet immediately dubbed him "Baby Yoda," and the reveal helped carry Disney+ through its opening year.
The show held his real name back until the Season 2 episode "The Jedi" in 2020, where Ahsoka Tano learns he is called Grogu, a survivor of the Jedi Temple raised at Coruscant before the Empire's rise. His bond with Din Djarin, the Mandalorian sworn to protect him, is the emotional spine of the series and the reason the two collectibles read as a pair.
