The Story

Stitch first appeared in Lilo & Stitch, the Walt Disney Animation Studios feature released in 2002 and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. In the film he is a genetic experiment, officially Experiment 626, engineered by the alien scientist Jumba Jookiba to be nearly indestructible and built for chaos. He escapes, crash-lands in Hawaii, and is adopted from a shelter by a lonely girl named Lilo, who mistakes him for a dog. Chris Sanders voiced the character, and the film's idea that "ohana means family" became its emotional core.

The character carried the franchise through sequels, a television series, and heavy merchandise, with especially strong demand across Asia.
